Snøhetta has debuted renderings for what is proposed to become Europe’s first underwater restaurant. Plotted for development in the coastal city of Båly, Norway, the eatery’s design comprises a concrete monolith half-emerged from the sea, which extends roughly 16 feet below the surface.
The 100-seat venue, referred to as Under, will be outfitted with large, 36-foot-wide acrylic windows to frame views of the marine ecosystem. An oak wall will wrap the face of the structure, leading to a wood-lined dining room appointed with deep green and blue hues inspired by the underwater surroundings. The volume will also serve as an aquatic research center and an artificial mussel reef.
