Joie de Vivre Hotels has announced the completion of the multimillion-dollar refresh of the Marker hotel in San Francisco. Led by Perkins+Will, the playful but sophisticated redesign pays homage to the historic, 1910 structure while also expressing a colorful and theatrical personality.
A simplified color scheme of soft white and pale gray serves as a backdrop for the expressive, colorful furniture, layered patterns, and dramatic lighting and art installations. Custom, Murano-inspired chandeliers suspended above the lobby entrance emit a lavender glow above a 12-foot-tall birdcage—one of many references to the novel the Maltese Falcon. A historic central fireplace is framed by an extensive book collection whose spines inject a variety of color into the space. An expansive, tufted turquoise banquette accents the hotel’s grand staircase.
The Living Room is wrapped with metallic wallcoverings, while custom patterned rugs and bespoke furniture outfit the space. An onsite art gallery features a collection curated by Jacqueline McGee and SFMOMA Artists Gallery that highlights local talent. Onsite amenities include 12,000 square feet of meeting spaces and ballrooms.
