Denver’s mountainous landscape is the perfect backdrop for Broken Rice, the city’s new Asian-fusion concept from Startup Restaurant. Inspired by the varying vistas and landscapes found across Asia, Los Angeles-based interior design practice Undisclosable chose to adorn the space with natural imagery and a minimalist aesthetic.
Anchored by a large but approachable central bar, the interior is appointed with a palette of yellow and white in reference to a sunset, which also creates depth and coziness. Orb-like fixtures installed over the bar are a distinctive element that reflect the interior as well as outdoor light. “They pick up the golden sunset tone painted above, reflecting it into the space like small suns floating above the bar,” says project manager Arense Zaragosa.
Conceived as large-scale chopsticks, pairs of wooden elements convey a kinetic, warm quality that complements the golden gradient effect employed behind the restaurant’s shelving. “We love the use of abstract, ambiguous objects in a space that can be interpreted simultaneously as several different things,” says Undisclosable partner Bryan Flaig. “The clusters of oversized chopsticks take on an animistic feel, perhaps reminiscent of jumping fish and birds.”
The hexagonal geometry visible throughout is derived from traditional Vietnamese patterns that often adorn antique tiles. Screens that line the perimeter further reflect textures and colors reminiscent of Asian street markets, while wallcovering speaks to the conventional landscape silhouettes. To bring the natural look full circle, glass patio doors open to an alfresco space that frames views of the Rocky Mountains.
“Most fast casual restaurants feel like they are one among many,” fellow partner Alejandra Lillo notes. “We wanted the design of Broken Rice to feel intimate and personal.”
