Los Angeles-based architecture practice Rios Clementi Hale Studios has been chosen to spearhead the redevelopment of Jones Plaza in Houston. The revitalization is set to begin next month in the heart of the city’s Theater District and is slated for completion in November 2020.
The project will draw inspiration from the kinetic nature of performance to promote discovery through partnership. The plaza’s north and south corners will function as the arrival thresholds, while west and east corners will serve to accommodate spaces oriented to the surrounding streetscape. Flexible dining spaces will be created alongside media towers that frame the Center Green of Jones Plaza. Nearly 300 seats will be appointed across two levels and connected by a grand staircase.
“For us, this is a remarkable opportunity to bring together the two things—public open space and venues for the performing arts—which have been at the heart of our most rewarding work,” says Rios Clementi Hale Studios principal-in-charge Nate Cormier. “Our design concept, called Urban Choreography, celebrates this dual role which Jones Plaza will play in Downtown Houston. It must be an inviting green oasis that contributes to the daily life of downtown residents, workers, and visitors—and at the same time, it must flexibly accommodate a wide range of cultural programming and special events.”
