Specializing in textured hair, modern beauty salon GoodBody has opened as part of a larger retail and dining revival in the heart of downtown Oakland, California. The double-height space occupies the site of a former office cluster overhauled by San Francisco-based architectural practice Homework to evoke femininity and elevate the ritual of self care.
The previously cavernous storefront was reimagined with sinuous millwork curves to better promote various onsite services across the modern hall, complemented by a crescent bench that transforms into a sculptural retail platform. Muted salmon tones wrap the interior, which is also populated by swivel chairs sheathed in golden tobacco-hued leather. LED light strips accent each station in tandem with slender arch-shaped mirrors, a form that is further echoed at the threshold that separates the service salon from the rear washroom. The private, cozy washroom offsets the palette with peacock green walls, amaretto leather reclining chairs, and black porcelain sinks.
“We are proud and ecstatic to showcase this unique space that we were able to execute during a pandemic and open in time to actualize the client’s vision: a beautiful destination in burgeoning downtown Oakland that offers specialized services for women’s hair in the spirit of celebrating diversity,” says Homework cofounder Susan Work.
