Global firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Torino, Italy firm Carlo Ratti Associati have won the competition to design 88 Market Street, a mixed-use tower in Singapore’s central business district. Ascending 920 feet and 51 stories, the highrise is slated for completion in 2021.
The 1 million-square-foot development will feature a series of green oases punctuating its vertical design at the base, core, and rooftop. The 60-foot-tall street-level City Room will be appointed with garden paths that will guide visitors to separate lobbies for residences and offices, as well as the central retail and dining hub. Premium offices will be installed across the top 29 floors of the tower, while luxe residences will be located on the lower eight floors. In the hardscape between the offices and residences will be the Green Oasis—an open-air garden that rises nearly 100 feet via a winding walkway. Housed 320 feet above ground, the vertical garden will also feature a jungle gym, treetop cocoons, sky hammocks, and a café.
“As someone with Singaporean heritage, I’m honored and humbled by the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing evolution of architecture in Singapore—the home of tropical modernism,” says BIG partner in charge Brian Yang. “BIG’s design looks to further this local typology by distinctly yet seamlessly blending the contemporary highrise with abundant greenery in-between the offices, residences, amenities, and recreation spaces.”
