Apple is set to introduce its latest retail outpost in Kyoto, its first in the city. The opening reflects the company’s efforts to expand its Japanese presence, while also spearheading revamps of existing units. Apple’s first retail space outside of the U.S. debuted in Tokyo in 2003.
Designed by London-based Foster + Partners, Appleās longtime design collaborators, the forthcoming Kyoto store will reflect the influence of local design motifs and materials. A translucent envelope wraps the store to allow interior light to emit an outward glow reminiscent of traditional Japanese lanterns. Special paper and a lightweight timber frame on the upper faƧade mirror traditional residential designs in the country. A multilevel atrium will anchor the interior as well.
The store opens Saturday, August 25th on theĀ ShijÅ Dori shopping corridor.
