Amsterdam-based design firm UXUS has unveiled the Pan-Asian brasserie concept Kebaya at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as part of the new departure Lounge 2. The indoor-outdoor restaurant reflects contemporary and traditional influences from across Asia and even draws its name from the formal Southeast Asian dress crafted from layers of sheer silk.
The influence of the dress is evident in the design as well, with Southeast Asian motifs layered together with stencil, paper-cut, and printing techniques. The layering effect amplifies the quasi-tropical ambiance of the restaurant through screening elements and evocative portraits of the dress in a purple accent along the feature wall.
Inspired by the vibrant outdoor environments of Asian dining venues, the concept includes an open kitchen at the center of the eatery, complete with theatrical installations that feature a roasted duck showcase, steam basket towers, and a spice display. Mirroring regional architecture, a copper and teak canopy unites varied seating areas for a holistic dining experience. Bamboo pendant lights, table lanterns, and regionally inspired upholstery promote the style principles at the core of Kebaya.
