Tihany Design to Craft the Aviary NYC at the Mandarin Oriental, New York

Adam D. Tihany of New York’s Tihany Design has partnered with Chicago-based chef Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas of the Alinea Group to bring the Chicago-based Aviary concept to the 35th floor of the Mandarin Oriental, New York by the end of this summer.

A refreshed circular lobby includes custom handtufted carpet and seating enclaves outfitted with inviting furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows will allow views of Central Park, Columbus Circle, and the Manhattan skyline. The open dining room will be framed with delicate gold woven metal mesh, while the 90-seat cocktail lounge will feature a comfortable, contemporary environment complete with plush leather swivel chairs and rounded sofas fixed around custom Decca artwork, metal-topped coffee and cocktail tables, and custom floor lamps. Gold fixtures will weave across the dark ceiling to illuminate custom dark blue carpeting and a palette of white, beige, and tan. The lounge will provide views into the glass-enclosed Drink Kitchen, which will be equipped with glass and bronze light fixtures, custom bar equipment, and black porcelain tiling.

Hidden beyond the Aviary NYC’s Drink Kitchen, the Office will serve as a warm bar reminiscent of bygone speakeasies. An industrial-style metal beam will span the perimeter of the 40-seat space beneath dark coiffered ceilings. Textured window panes will recall early 20th-century New York, while smoky parquet floors, vintage rugs, marble-topped coffee tables, and deep-seated leather and suede club chairs will further set the mood. The bar area will include a wood and bronze bartop, hanging pendants, and stools upholstered in leather and cowhide.
