The hip Shoreditch section of East London has welcomed fine dining restaurant Kailo with a concept by local design agency FormRoom, which reinterpreted the Roman Empire via a modern lens.
In addition to a material palette of rich obsidian, which complements mosaic elements and plaster finishes, the dining room is configured akin to an ancient Roman courtyard complete with Roman pillars. A grand central bar and a sweeping, arched staircase anchor the space, while the interior also features a coworking area in the back where a deli is also housed.
Along with a private chef’s table, semi-private booths line one of the walls with acoustically engineered insets to capture sound and establish greater intimacy. Even the restrooms honor the inspiration of Roman architecture, conceived as a continuous porch with a central fountain.
