The new Calgary eatery Donna Mac is crafted with a modest simplicity inspired by Brutalist architecture courtesy of Sarah Ward Design. The locally based design practice emphasized strong geometric forms to complement a raw aesthetic.
“The goal wasn’t to create ‘wow’ factor. Rather, we chose to design a space that was more restrained and sensual,” Ward says. “The use of mass and volume create tension and contrast, and the repetitive patterns and undulating façades are visually gripping.”
Conceived by graphic designer Marc Rimmer, graphics feature soft colors and a fluid script that contrast the rest of the interior. In addition, local ceramist Becky McMaster created the restaurant’s custom dishware.
