Siobhan Barry, partner and executive creative director for New York-based design firm dash design, has completed work on the Amsterdam, a new restaurant in New York’s Hudson Valley. Housed within a former 1798 Dutch Colonial home known as the Asher House, the sophisticated farm-to-table concept draws its name from Rhinebeck’s original Dutch settlers.
Clerestory windows maintain a connection to the street outside, while steel beams replace five columns to open up the interior. The 82-seat eatery exudes warmth and tranquility across the L-shaped dining room on the ground floor with an “inside out kitchen,” a lively pale gray open-shelved galley clad with a reclaimed butcher block counter. Accented with natural oak shelving and brass and illuminated with grazed lighting, the patinaed zinc bar serves as the hearth of the restaurant and anchors the main floor. In addition, the bar shares a Dutch door to the kitchen for a peek into the activities taking place, while a 150-bottle wine display framed in a dove gray tile completes the scene.
Featuring wide plank floors and two additional fireplaces, the cozy second floor hosts private dining and events. Tall oak trees shade the rear garden, which is appointed with multiple dining areas, firepits, lounge seating, beer garden tables, and a 40-foot bocce court.
