The Charcohol Restaurant & Cocktail Bar has debuted in Shanghai to serve an experience that unfolds around an axis of time and temperature. Housed within a heritage structure, the aptly name venue is crafted by locally based Studio8 to embody the transformative nature of charcoal across its three dining rooms.
The bold restaurant features retained elements of its historic structure contrasted with the addition of a new steel and glass volume. Beyond its entrance anchored by half-burnt wooden columns and lava stone blocked floors, the eatery’s first room is lined with wood floors and blackened walls, while the central, main dining room conveys rough textures along its blackened floors and walls. A large installation of fanned palm leaves is suspended above the bar below a reflective stainless steel dome, and the third dining space showcases an original brick wall beside a white-gray wall of plaster. An additional installation composed of banana leaves and eucalyptus seeds hangs akin to a bouquet chandelier as well.
