Italian and German firm Network of Architecture (NOA) has completed its renovation and expansion of the Zallinger Refuge in Castelrotto, Italy. The project, which aimed to enhance the quality and capacity of the retreat without impacting the landscape or surrounding environment, includes the addition of seven new chalets in the South Tyrol meadow.
For a total of 24 rooms, the new chalets sit upon concrete plateaus separate from the 13 guestrooms in the central building. Evoking a traditional alpine aesthetic, wood lines the walls with fittings inspired by the clothing of hunters. The resort’s central volume has also been reconfigured as a restaurant, lobby, and lounge for both guests and passing skiers and includes a giant tree-trunk bar. In addition to felt flooring, sound-absorbing panels sit behind wood panels, which wrap the interiors, to help dampen the sound.
