Rosewood has introduced its newest outpost in Yangon, Myanmar. Located within the former New Law Courts building, the Rosewood Yangon was crafted by New York–based Lillian Wu Studio and Tokyo-based Bond Design Studio to merge Yangon’s history and culture with contemporary comforts.
Original three-story Ionic colonnades punctuate the arrival experience, along with three original chandeliers suspended from the striking portico. Burmese artist Than Kyaw Htay was tapped to craft a locally inspired mural above the reception area that depicts the region’s iconic sunsets and rugged landscapes.
The design team preserved a number of the building’s 20th-century features, including two internal courtyards, pyramidal pavilion rooftops, and the entrance halls on the building’s north and south sides. Additionally, perforated metal screens are installed across the interior, cast-iron balustrades are fixed upon the first-floor landings, and wooden screens adorn the public spaces.
Bond Design Studio oversaw the various dining and lounge venues, composing each with a distinctive identity. Fast-paced, farm-to-table eatery NOVA European Brasserie is anchored by an open kitchen and massive skylight, and the Living Room & Patisserie serves as the hotel’s onsite café concept. The intimate CourtRoom Bar is punctuated with heritage décor and restored dark teak wall panels. Later this year, the Rosewood Yangon will welcome the rooftop Y Bar and a Chinese restaurant.
Sense, Rosewood’s signature spa, is slated to join existing wellness amenities—a fitness studio and rooftop infinity swimming pool—late 2020.
Designed by Lillian Wu Studio, all 205 accommodations feature high ceilings, and patios and balconies frame city and internal courtyard views. Each of the onsite suites juxtapose old and new through the installation of striking lacquerware and papier-mâché décor alongside bold, semi-abstract artwork by local talents.
