The Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore has reopened its Tower Wing following an eight-month redesign to the lobby, Nami Restaurant and Bar, and guestrooms. The extensive overhaul from Ryoichi Niwata of Tokyo-based Bond Design Studio immerses guests in nature, with wind, water, wood, trees, and stone integrated into the refreshed spaces.
While all 503 accommodations have been appointed with unique artwork and wooden consoles cut from sustainable North American timber, public spaces convey an elegant Japanese aesthetic with sustainable materials sourced from Southeast Asia and vintage pieces sourced from global antique dealers.
Welcoming guests to the lobby, a tree canopy installation from Studio Sawada Design comprises thousands of swirling three-toned metallic leaves to symbolize the movement of nature in water, trees, and clouds.
Crafted by artist Yi Hwan Kwon, six sculptures of children near the infinity pool instill a free-spirited quality within the lobby. Two large root balls and finishes on the lobby furniture, walls, and framing add a natural, rustic touch that complements the contemporary lobby design and furniture. Six potted weeping fig trees loom over the lobby’s armchairs providing guests with a relaxing canopy, while a 600-square-foot basalt feature wall—the largest in Southeast Asia—at the center of the lobby lounge evokes a tropical freshness.
