Swedish architecture firm Wingårdhs has completed the interior refresh of the Radisson Collection Hotel, Strand Stockholm. The renovation injects a renewed sense of luxury into the hotel while also maximizing its historic splendor.
The property, which originally opened in 1912 to accommodate travelers for that year’s Olympic Games, is situated between the city’s harbor and its Medieval city center. Among the hotel’s new amenities is the Strand, an authentic Swedish brasserie, as well as the laidback, stylish bar—both of which are accessible through a reopened side entrance. Large floor-to-ceiling windows adorn the space in addition to a dramatic light installation. Included among the enhanced interior’s new soft textures and rich colors is the custom gray shade—Strand Grey—engineered by Wingårdhs for the project.
“We believe in creating a dynamic experience by amplifying the building’s own character. We wanted the new elements to be a distinctive addition to the original appearance,” says Leila Atlassi, project leading architect at Wingårdhs. “The interior tonality has been set from natural materials like stone, wood, leather, and metal in their natural colors. A specific tone of gray is noticed on the walls and constitutes the base in the interior concept.”
The redesign also emphasizes functionality and durability, with upgrades to the interior layout to better link the original 1912 structure with its extension from the 1930s. The custom gray tones further accent the improved flow between the two buildings along with a new collection of onsite artwork commissioned from a number of young artists thanks to local firm Young Art. All 170 refurbished guestrooms are outfitted in a residential style with support from dark tones and rich wooden materials. The Tower suite, located on the top floor, enjoys a private rooftop terrace, while the Sea Salon suite overlooks the bay.
