Muji Announces Hotel Properties in China and Japan

Minimalist Japanese retailer Muji has announced plans to introduce a hotel concept in its native Tokyo and Shenzhen, China. The Chinese outpost is poised to debut by the end of 2017, while the Tokyo location will open as part of a forthcoming global flagship in the spring of 2019.

Designs for the four-story Shenzhen hotel will be executed by Tokyo-based design practice Super Potato. The building will include a retail concept, restaurant, and fitness center in addition to 79 guestrooms that will span five varying configurations.

Located in Tokyo’s Ginza district, Muji’s retail-hotel hybrid will span 10 stories upon completion. The 35,520-square-foot store—its largest ever—will be housed across the building’s first six floors, while the 79-room hotel will be situated on floors seven through 10. Guestrooms at both Chinese and Japanese hotels will be finished with recycled wood and feature Muji furniture and accessories.
