Mumbai-based architecture and design practice GA Design has completed work on the Sheraton Grand Conakry, Guinea, West Africa. Located on the pristine beachfront of Conakry, Guinea, the 282-room hotel is anchored in a connection with the surrounding city as well as the natural setting.
The first-floor lobby frames frame optimal ocean views through a double-height Sheraton link that forms an ascending sequence of volumes. Materials, fabrics, and artifacts are sourced locally and featured prominently across the 11-story hotel.
Because of the property’s proximity to the equator, shading devices and fenestration are in place to minimize solar gains, while balconies on the west-facing façade are designed more than 6 feet deep to ensure solar protection to the rooms below. Lower roofs are designed with roof gardens as well, and the upper roof includes a double roof to reduce solar gains. Daylight sensors, energy recovery wheels, and durable glazing also serve as part of the hotel’s sustainable measures.
