The Asbury Ocean Club, Surfside Resort and Residences, has made its highly anticipated debut on the shoreline of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The 17-story property joins other fixtures from the shore’s redevelopment including the Asbury hotel and the recently reopened Asbury Lanes. 2017 Platinum Circle honoree Anda Andrei spearheaded the design of the project alongside New York-based firms Handel Architects and Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture.
“We took on a beach house vernacular that’s open, light, and airy, and we kept materials simple—concrete and glass with wood accents,” says Handel Architects principal Gary Handel. “Balconies extend out to accentuate the horizontal quality of the views. We then added a gentle curvature to the building to reflect the shoreline.”
Residences crown the property above the 54-room boutique hotel concept. Hotel guests and tenants will intermingle on the fourth floor, which is home to an expansive terrace and pool overlooking the ocean. The outdoor space will also be appointed with a full-service pool bar and grill as well as a garden pavilion outfitted with a reflecting pool and an outdoor lounge that boasts a fireplace.
In addition to retail on the ground floor, a double-height lobby is appointed with a reception desk and polished, custom concrete and slatted oak walls. Interiors also feature white lacquered cabinetry, bleached white oak engineered hardwood flooring, stone countertops, and polished porcelain Marvel Calacatta walls and walk-in showers bathrooms. Included among the onsite amenities, the fitness center overlooks the ocean and includes a spa as well as a yoga room and meditation terrace. The hotel’s library and game room is equipped with a custom billiards installation, while the exclusive event room houses a demonstration kitchen.
“It’s impossible to find a place that’s so close to New York City, on the ocean, with incredible, architecturally significant buildings, amazing history and soul, and a major music scene,” Andrei says. “With Asbury Ocean Club, we’re striking a beautiful balance that’s true to oceanfront living—luxurious without being pretentious, relaxed yet chic—the elegance of timeless materials in a modern and contemporary setting. It’s different from anything in the region, the building feels like it belongs on this beach.”
