Aman has announced plans to launch its third Japanese resort, the Aman Kyoto, this November. Adjacent to the Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and situated upon a hidden garden, the resort from Australian firm Kerry Hill Architects will comprise 24 rooms as well as two two-bedroom villas that reinterpret the country’s traditional ryokan and onsen concepts.
Set upon an 80-acre plot, the Aman Kyoto will comprise 72 acres of permanent forest and eight acres of lush, manicured gardens. Large granite boulders will punctuate the property’s formal lawn at the heart of the site to accent the setting. The simple design offers a series of new standalone pavilions that host the spaces for Arrival, Living, Dining, and the Spa. All 24 guestrooms will reside across four guest pavilions, while two addition pavilions will house the villas, overlooking the forest canopy. Each minimalist accommodation will be wrapped with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views of the natural scenery and flood interiors with light.
Adorned with a neutral palette, the Living Pavilion will be anchored by a central fireplace and glass doors that open to a Zen garden. The Dining Pavilion will be clad with custom ceramic tiles, while the Aman Spa will be outfitted with traditional onsen bathing facilities that source water from a local spring.
