Billed as the longest consecutively named Five-Star, Five-Diamond property in the U.S., Colorado Springs’ Broadmoor Hotel dates back to 1918. Over the years, it’s been through several interventions, including the addition of a now-50-year-old wing.
Englewood, Colorado-based Johnson David Interiors recently put the finishing touches on a $60 million revamp of that dated West tower. Part of an overall $100 million refurbishment mandated by new owners, the renovation includes a three-floor addition with 31 new guest rooms and eight suites, increasing the building’s room total to 119. Existing Broadmoor West rooms were also enlarged—by widening the circa-1976 building—to allow for the installation of new marble baths.
“The new owner is taking a fresh look at this incredible campus while making sure the story goes forward,” says principal Cindy Johnson, who has designed various Broadmoor interiors since 1999. “We were challenged to bring it up to snuff and to do so on a compressed, six month schedule.” To achieve that, Johnson incorporated period details such as stained glass skylights, custom-painted Italian urns, stone flooring, and custom millwork.
The firm also handled interiors for a new restaurant, Natural Epicurean, as well as a space called Play that includes a six-lane bowling alley and shuffleboard table. With chandeliers, saddle-brown leather settees, and a big fireplace clad in leather, the area “reeks of Broadmoor elegance,” Johnson says.
Other new additions to the complex include two lodges—Cloud Camp and the Fish House (both designed by Johnson David)—and fine dining offering Ristorante del Lago by New York-based Tihany Design.
