Amsterdam-based Studio Modijefsky has designed new East Amsterdam pizzeria Mama Dough. Defined by a chalky palette that references flour, the restaurant has been revamped from its original configuration to create an open and inviting layout.
Covered in glossy gray wall and terrazzo counter tiles, the kitchen is reoriented to the front of the restaurant, complete with a pizza oven finished in weathered corten steel. The tiling creates a partition between the kitchen and dining room, which is flooded with light thanks to a skylight, illuminating special wall finishes like weathered gray stucco and chalkboard that intensify the presence of light boxes, which are formed based on existing spatial shapes in the walls and ceiling.
A central bar anchors the interior. Featuring a heavy wooden finish that complements the oven, the bar’s round shape and warm color are highlighted by a playfully patterned glass rack and overhead lamps. Bistro chairs infuse an Italian quality alongside barstools that add additional color. Folded elements in the mirrors create illusionary scenes, while the owner’s love for music is referenced in a table designed as a huge record.
Shielded by parasols, the cozy terrace includes a variety of colors and patterns as well as sunscreens and French façade lights, and terrazzo tabletops complement the graphic patterns of a bench that spans the length of the space.
