Costa Mesa, California-based studio Davis Ink has unveiled the redesigned Time nightclub in Orange County, California. Originally designed as a Nike Town outpost, the space has been infused with theatrical lighting and enhanced sound to complement its unique aesthetic.
“Although the space had been abandoned for many years, it was filled with all sorts of cool architectural details,” says Davis Krumins of Davis Ink. “The two-level building shell was composed of three intersecting circular spaces. These organic shapes allowed us to break away from the standard rectangular nightclub layout.”
A preexisting three-level staircase was removed and a remaining elevator shaft wall was revamped to accommodate a 35-foot custom LED wall, which serves as the backdrop for an Alice in Wonderland-inspired DJ booth. Internal walls were nearly all removed in order to enlarge the venue’s dance floor and ensure no visual disruptions. Two small, circular rooms are reimagined as large circular bars that, when intersecting with three additional circular spaces, createsthe amoeba-shaped dance floor.
The main bar features funky, organic elements such as tree branches to support backlit shelving, a boxwood-faced green soffit, and snakeskin fabric paneling. Honeycomb-inspired hexagon panels comprise the secondary bar, while the front bar consists of hexagonal barnwood screens. Suspended from the kaleidoscope ceiling created from black and white silhouettes of a woman’s form, a massive chandelier with green hat-shaped lampshades illuminates the venue, and additional touches include a 20-foot-tall champagne display and custom butterfly wallpaper at the entrance.
