Myanmar’s Strand Yangon hotel is set to reopen its doors next month following a six-month restoration and modernization at the hand of GCP Hospitality’s in-house team.
The 31-room hotel received a slew of upgrades to its original architecture from local artisans, including its teak paneling, antique bedsteads, traditional Myanmar lacquer ware, and marble floors. The traditional décor in the guestrooms and suites is complemented now by vintage-inspired textiles and original artwork.
Featuring high vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, and museum-quality black and gold lacquer panels, the upscale Strand Restaurant will return this December, now led by executive chef Christian Martena. Martena will oversee culinary operations throughout the property including at the Strand Café, which has been preserved and expanded. The onsite bar, a social hub for more than a century, will be reintroduced as the Sarkies Bar at the Strand Hotel in honor of the hotel’s founders Aviet and Tigran Sarkies. Featuring teakwood paneling and leather seating, the bar will offer a glamorous club-like atmosphere.
