San Francisco’s Inn at Union Square—a Greystone property—is slated to unveil its top-to-bottom overhaul by Perkins + Will this month. The renovation of the 30-room boutique hotel draws its inspiration from the city’s celebrated philanthropist and arts patron Alma Spreckels, who is also known as the “great grandmother of San Francisco.”
A new white and gray palette will be punctuated by accents of plum, gold, and burnt orange. Guestrooms will also be outfitted with tufted headboards, plush velvet lounge chairs, blackout drapes, ample seating, and artwork inspired by both San Francisco and Spreckels’ passion for dance, theater, and French Baroque design. Renovated spa-like bathrooms will boast Carrara marble, floating glass shelves, and oversized mirrors, and guestroom doors will be personalized with their own color, number, and knocker inspired by the city’s doors.
Public spaces are also receiving upgrades. Fashioned as a formal entryway, the lobby will be clad with oversized artwork, soft benches, and accessories to instill a home-like sense. Public parlors on each floor will deliver a modern interpretation of San Francisco’s historic, formal living rooms, and include woodburning fireplaces, soft seating, and cabinet walls lined with artwork, vases, and sculptures. Hardwood floors and gallery artwork will span the property’s corridors.
