Anantara has launched its second property in Sri Lanka with the Anantara Kalutara Resort. An hour south of the capital Colombo, the 141-room resort is set upon a secluded hideaway along the southwest coast of the Indonesian island with coastal, river, and lagoon frontage.
Inspired by iconic craftsmanship, the property was originally designed by the late architect Geoffrey Bawa, and maximizes its tropical setting with colonial and Sri Lankan artistry. The main building’s soaring gable roof reflects the Dutch colonial influence, while the openness of the reception area welcomes breezes and a view of the Kalu River estuary.
Guestrooms are equipped with wine humidors while suites boast upscale lounge areas. The one-bedroom presidential suite is clad with a private plunge pool and sundeck. While each room includes private balconies and terraces, one- and two-bedroom villas feature enclosed garden terraces as well as a private pool and sundeck.
Dedicated to Bawa, the resort library serves as a quiet retreat, showcasing the architect’s archived drawings and some of his favorite designs. Surrounded by a lotus pond, the two-story Anantara Spa includes ten treatment rooms. Additional amenities include three restaurants; the Upper Deck, which includes light fare and sunset views; and two outdoor swimming pools.
The resort’s conference center, accommodating up to 500 guests, is set to arrive in March 2017.
