Hamburg-based studio JOI-Design has revealed its refresh of the 13-room annex at the Altenberger Hof, a boutique property overlooking the 13th century Altenberg Cathedral in Odenthal, Germany. The modern concept draws inspiration from the neighboring cathedral’s architecture and the lush natural surroundings of the nearby Bergisches Land forests.
A neutral, restrained palette across the centuries-old structure is in harmony with the austere stone façade, and is mixed with splashes of orange and red. Artwork and accessories offset the understated elegance, offering playful touches to create a residential-style environment, while bespoke carpeting recalls the cathedral’s flagstone floors.
Flanked by a dining room and meeting space, a light, open room welcomes visitors. Cozy furniture is positioned around an open fireplace, offering a place for guests to enjoy the onsite library’s collection. A dark-stained communal timber table is designed to resemble an old farmhouse door—a bridge between the ancient and modern details. Contemporary seating is upholstered in taupe leather and fabric while wire-frame copper pendants illuminate the nature-themed accents that bring outdoor elements in, creating a lighthearted atmosphere.
Elegant neutral shades are also featured in the guestrooms, with contrasting tones in finishes and fabrics. Bathrooms are outfitted with large showers, glossy, dark gray tiles, and screens crafted from smoked glass, lighter-toned surfaces, and vanity tops. Bedside wall hooks and light fixtures formed from orange glass cast a lively, warm glow.
An expansive meeting space can be partitioned with a curtain to accommodate multiple functions. A formal area is clad with a long table and colorful chairs, while the breakout area features modern seating with plentiful loose cushions for a more casual ambiance.
