Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has completed the new Morpheus hotel flagship as part of the City of Dreams resort in Macau. Clad with a geometric, exoskeleton-like grid, the structure bucks the need for columns or internal walls to provide a spacious interior.
“Morpheus combines its optimal arrangement with structural integrity and sculptural form. The design is intriguing as it makes no reference to traditional architectural typologies,” says ZHA project director Viviana Muscettola. “Macau’s buildings have previously referenced architecture styles from around the world. Morpheus has evolved from its unique environment and site conditions as a new architecture, expressly of this city.”
Internal voids carved into the rectangular block create windows that frame city views. The intricate web reflects traditional Chinese jade carving techniques that establish fluid forms from hard minerals. A total of 770 guestrooms, suites, and sky villas are featured onsite along with a rooftop spa and pool. Additional resort amenities include a casino, retail hub, 20 restaurants, and two theaters.
