RSS The Porcelain Gods: Toilets for 2009

A Floral Arrangement
Red hibiscus, yellow orchid and morning glory are just some of the flower-shaped urinals that San Francisco artist Clark Sorensen designed by hand. His work, which also includes a snail shell, is installed in a restaurant in Bermuda, a hotel in Germany and he is currently working on pieces for a garden center in Italy. How appropriate.

Trump Palace’s Egg-cellent Toilet
This egg-shaped bathroom was designed by Michael Wolk for the 8,000-sq.-ft. condo in Trump Palace in Sunny Isles, Fla. The bathroom features an all white, oval design, with a yolk-yellow bathmat to add a flash of color to the rest of the room. Oval fixtures and fittings tie in with cylinder-style architecture is found throughout the entire suite.

Bathroom Bling
This one truly is a “throne.” From the Isis collection of Hollywood, Fla. designer Jemal Wright, this “blinged-out” toilet has been encrusted with Swarovski crystals. It costs $75,000 for interested buyers. Champagne toilet water not included.

Yet Another Place for Ads
WOW Toilet offers a transparent tank front. Art, whether it is artistic flourish or advertising, can be slipped in. The company will soon be rolling out a transparent seat, creating yet another place you never thought you’d see an ad.

The Cell Breaks Out
This egg-shaped toilet design from Sung Hoon Mun is called “Cell.” Its simple design does away with the high back that holds the tank.

A Stone’s Throw
Now we move from egg to pebble. According to Villeroy & Boch, the designers of this toilet and bidet set, the collection was inspired from the interaction between water and stone. The toilet resembles an organic pebble shape and the high-quality ceramic appears strong and functional, while remaining simple and sleek.

You’re Benched
For those looking to save some space, this toilet with a sliding wood panel can serve as an elegant table or bench when not in use, complete with stainless steel drawers. Troy Adams has a reputation for fusing Asian, European and American design in his works, so fusing the pieces of furniture themselves is perhaps a logical next step.

Porta-Potty Surprise
The designers of this bathroom at the Jungle Jim International Market went for a decidedly down-market look. But as the guest walks into what appears to be an unappealing port-o-let, they will be surprised to find a hallway leading to a decorated 10-stall restroom, complete with flowers, green tile and marble. The market won the award for “America’s Best Restroom” from Cintas Corporation in 2007.

Queenstown Sofitel’s ‘Loo With a View’
Here’s looking at you, kid. Sofitel Queenstown, Australia’s “loo with a view” came from Peter Dallimore, the marketing manager the Australian hotel’s developer Perron. The backdrop features life-size photographs of local models getting a close look at the guests. Beyond these spectators, the toilets themselves have an unusual conical shape with a lowered tank to ensure unobstructed “views.”

So Clean You Can Eat Out of It
These folks may have gone too far with the interesting toilet theme. Modern Toilet is chain of restaurants in Taiwan with a modern decor and a toilet-centric theme. The seats are faux-toilets. Gender-coded signs and sink faucets appear throughout the restaurant, and food is served in porcelain toilet dishes. In case you were wondering: Shabu Shabu, soup and soft-serve ice cream are the house favorites.
