Yas Hotel Lights Up Abu Dhabi
Nov 3, 2009
Leading-edge LED technology is shining a stylish spotlight on the new Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi. The structure, designed by Asymptote Architecture, features an expanse of sweeping curvilinear forms constructed of steel and more than 5,300 pivoting diamond-shaped glass panels illuminated via a sophisticated lighting system courtesy of Cooper Lighting and Enfis. From the outside, the Enfis LED color-changing shroud can be seen for miles around, producing optical effects and spectral reflections that play against the surrounding sky, sea, and desert landscape. The architecture as a whole performs as both an environmentally responsive solution as well as an architecture of spectacle and event. A total of 208,800 LEDs were used on the hotel, making it one of the largest LED projects in the world.
The 500-room hotel also features a racetrack running through its center, hosting the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this past weekend. The race was rescheduled to begin at dusk and finish in the dark, thus showcasing Yas Hotel's illuminating beauty.
