Joie de Vivre's Citizen Hotel has put a new spin on quintessential Sacramento. Located two blocks from the state capitol, the hotel is housed within a restored 1920s-era high rise. Joie de Vivre hired San Francisco designer and hotel restoration guru Candra Scott to create interiors that reflected Sacramento's political climate. The boutique hotelier preserved the historic building's distinctive architectural elements, including its mansard roof, soaring ceilings, grand center staircase, marble panels, and the 1920s-era clock in the lobby.
"We envisioned an end result unique to Sacramento, something that reflected Sacramento's zeitgeist, its history, and political flavor, but also the new, exciting energy in its downtown core," says Joie de Vivre CEO Chip Conley. "With the Citizen, we combined a classic 1930s and 1940s look and feel, then infused it with 21st-century edginess and added timeless attention to guest amenities."
The hotel's 198 guestrooms feature one of 40 classic political cartoons and bedside lampshades inscribed with text from the California constitution. Five penthouse suites have access to open-air terraces, one of which can host events of up to 180 people.
In addition, the ground floor includes a ballroom adjacent to the restored lobby and conference space. Chef Michael Tuohy leads Grange, the hotel's signature restaurant, which connects to Scandal, a bar that overlooks the hotel lobby and includes works from Sacramento Bee political cartoonist Rex Babin. High-tech meeting and event space measuring 11,000 square feet targets business clientele.
"We're creating a unique business and event setting that spares nothing in terms of effectiveness and comfort, and creating it at an unbeatable downtown location for access in every sense of the word," Conley says.
