British designer Alexander Purcell recently debuted his APRRO line of contemporary furniture to the industry. His interdisciplinary design studio aims at pushing the boundaries of new materials and forms by using new technology and different manufacturers to produce pieces.
For Purcell's new line, contemporary craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology was key. He worked with two manufacturers, London-based Studio Caparo and Los Angeles-based Machine Histories, to "bridge the gap between art and manufacturing." Clean lines and different materials define the collection. Shown here from top is the JFK Desk made out of walnut and aluminum and designed by Purcell and Richard Overcash; and the fluid walnut Side Table and Lounge Chair designed by Richard Overcash. For Purcell's other collections, Corian and leather are mixed with aluminum.
The designer, who graduated with an MA in Architecture from Cambridge University and studied product design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, has worked at Richard Rogers and Manser Associates in London on projects including the Millennium Dome, the Great Eastern Hotel, and Sketch restaurant and bar. The designer was then Los Angeles bound and became an award-winning art director for M&C Saatchi LA. Now, it's all about products.
