Form and Function

Oct 14, 2009

moroso wavy chair
Moroso presents an eclectic line of products. This collection brings together existing and new designs from many of the leading international designers Moroso has long been working with. The collection, for both residential and hospitality environments, uses a wide variety of materials and strong colors.

Tropicalia: This line was designed by famed product designer Patricia Urquiola and features bands of translucent yarns crisscrossing over steel frames in a variety of rainbow hues. Each object in the collection, which includes a chaise, armchair, chair, outdoor bed, and swinging nest, takes on a different personality depending on the material and color used. The three material options are: thermoplastic polymer threads in many playful color combinations; polyester cording either all black, all white, or a combination of the two; and leather cord, for indoor use only.

Shadowy Chair and Sunny Lounger: Created by Tord Boontje, the chair and lounger come in bold colors and robust forms, and were designed to evoke 1920s beach furniture from Northern Europe. Shadowy is named for its curvaceous high back that protects the sitter from the afternoon sun; Sunny lets the user catch those rays while relaxing on the built-in headrest. A combination of craft and technology clearly demonstrating Moroso's global approach to design, these pieces were inspired by furniture woven by Senegalese craftsmen using traditional techniques interpreted in nylon yarn leftover from the fishing industry. Made in Africa, the pieces are woven into traditional herringbone patterns, but are amplified with new color combinations and stretched over frames made of tubular steel galvanized with zinc and then painted. The colorways include Supercolor, Multired, Multigreen, Black and White, and Green.

Blackstone Tables: These tables incorporate flower photography by Massimo Gardone in tables designed by Luca Nichetto. The tops, in shades of black and gray, are printed through a sublimation process on porcelain bonded with glass. Square tables come in a choice of 11 floral images, while the rectangular table comes in two. Table legs are in stainless steel for outdoors and powder-coated steel for indoors.

Fool on the Hill: This collection, also designed by Luca Nichetto, is a series of low ceramic stools in solid color glazes including a metallic gold and silver. Currently being previewed for production later in the year, Fool on the Hill can be decorated in black or platinum images that recall Massimo Gardone's floral photos.

Rain: Created by Tord Boontje, Rain incorporates this Dutch designer's floral flourishes in perforated patterning on the back, seat, and tabletop. An arm and armless chair and table are made of white lacquered steel.

Wavy (pictured): Designed by Ron Arad, the chair's surface is a made up of thermoformed polyethylene plastic seat membrane suspended like a cocoon from the tubular steel frame. This design experiments with new materials, pushing their capabilities and performance beyond expectations. This stacking chair comes in clear, as well as red and gray.

Supernatural: This stacking armchair and table are additions to Ross Lovegrove's successful armless chair of the same name. The collection uses a sophisticated process involving two layers of polyamide with glass fiber reinforcement to create a design that is very light in weight and super durable for outdoor use. Particularly well suited to restaurants, cafes, and educational settings, as well as the backyard and home garden use, the table comes in square or round top. The collection is offered in white, light blue, fluorescent green, orange, black, and light gray.

Shitake: Marcel Wander's Shitake stools feature an embossed lacy relief pattern inspired by the tale of Snow White. Wanders refers to the scene of Snow White's death, where the elves mournfully sit on little stools covered in lace, which Snow White had embroidered and given to them for their 100th birthday. Shitake mushrooms, which grow on tree trunks, are referred to in Wander's native Dutch language by a word that means "bench for elves." It also indicates the fact that they could be used indoors or out. Molded of plastic, the stools are 20 ½-inches across by 17 inches high and come in black, white, or red.
