IHG has pledged $1 million over the next five years to the University of Oxford for research into rare and threatened plants. The hotel group is using its Priority Club Rewards program to fund the donation by asking its 44 million members to switch from paper to online statements. IHG estimates that switching to online statements will save up to $400,000 every year; the company plans to donate half of these savings directly to the Department of Plant Sciences at Oxford.
"We're committed to finding innovative solutions to the environmental, social, and economic effects of travel and to ensure we're developing and operating hotels in a responsible way," says David Jerome, IHG's senior vice president for corporate responsibility, in a statement. "Oxford University is the perfect partner to help us better understand conservation, address environmental concerns, and ultimately safeguard the world's favorite tourist destinations for generations to come."
