Puerto Rico is transforming its hospitality image, thanks to the influx of luxury golf resorts to the country. Even though a 3 to 5 percent drop in visitors is projected for the coming year, hoteliers continue to add or improve many high-end hotel brands. For instance, Trump International Golf Club and Residences is under construction, while a J.W. Marriott is also in the works. In 2011, Mandarin Oriental and Regent Hotels will open establishments in Palmas del Mar, a resort near San Juan that features champion golf courses designed by Rees Jones and Gary Player. Paradisus recently upgraded to Gran Melia Puerto Rico Golf Resort and Villas, and El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa on the island's northeast coast recently completed a $120 million renovation and has plans to add a second golf course. The Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort also undertook a massive renovation, with plans to spend another $4 million to improve the resort's clubhouse and two 18-hole golf courses.
