The National Trust for Historic Preservation has designated two ForrestPerkins-designed hotels with National Preservation Honor Awards: The Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit and the Nines, situated atop the restored Meier & Frank Building in Portland, Oregon.
When it opened in 1924, the 33-story Book Cadillac Hotel was the tallest hotel in the world. Closed for more than two decades, the Westin Book Cadillac has been reborn after a three-year, $180 million renovation. "The Grande Dame of Washington Blvd. is as resplendent as she was on the day the Book brothers opened for business," says Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
After a meticulous $166 million renovation, the historic Meier & Frank building houses the Nines, a luxury hotel with 331 rooms surrounding a skylit atrium. "The renovation of the Meier & Frank building is a triumph of adaptive reuse, green technology, and sustainable historic development," Moe says.
