W South Beach Celebrates Grand Opening

July 15, 2009

W South Beach has opened, featuring the design talents of architects Costas Kondylis and NBWW & Associates, Anna Busta of Studio B Design, and landscape designer Paula Hayes. Paying homage to the area's art deco heritage, Kondylis crafted a building that positions guestrooms on a 25-degree angle, providing views of the Atlantic Ocean. Designed by Busta, the W Living Room is outfitted with floors inlaid with bronze and wood with a terrazzo border, sofas imported from Italy, aubergine velvet curtains, white pony armchairs and rugs, inlaid horn tables, and a row of white quartzite columns set against a soaring 120-foot-long marble wall. A shimmering, 20-foot-high beaded curtain set off by glass walls leads guests into the W Living Room Bar.

Developed by conceptual landscape artist Hayes in collaboration with Busta, a serene garden known as Grove was inspired by the beautiful landscapes found in the Provence region of France. Guests can travel on winding paths among the swamp lily and flowering grasses, lanterns from the late 19th century, sheets of poetry suspended from sea grape trees, and 1920s-era objects discovered in French flea markets.

At ultra-lounge the Wall, a vintage gold sofa inspired by Le Corbusier—created exclusively for W South Beach—serves as the focal point. A gold and black motif, lacquered bar, Cappellini stools, and a ceiling of fine copper mesh further define the space. Featuring the design work of Michael Chow, Mr. Chow Miami offers a stepped entrance, modern screens, black lacquer furniture, and a 125-foot gold leaf and Swarovski crystal chandelier. The 234-seat Solea restaurant features walnut floors, two wine walls, a VIP dining area, communal tables made from single slabs of fallen maple wood, oversized banquettes in rich chocolate brown leather, and glowing glass lanterns hanging on the walls and from the ceilings.

Adorned in shades of teal and white, the Yabu Pushelberg-designed residences and guestrooms incorporate floors made of white ceramic tiles with a wood grain finish, floor-to-ceiling screens that delineate living and sleeping areas, modern Italian steel gray sofas, and photographs by rock photographer Danny Clinch. Other amenities at W South Beach include Bliss Spa; WET, offering two pools and stylish cabanas; 10,000-plus square feet of meeting and event space; fitness center; and basketball and tennis courts.
