Dunes Village Resort Given a Green Slate

Oct 26, 2009

By Sarah Knapp

Dunes Village Resort was recently certified as Green Clean Safe by the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association (MBAHA). The Green Clean Safe program looks to ensure the quality of the Myrtle Beach hospitality industry and increase visitor interest in the area.

Dunes Village's green efforts include a bath towel and bed sheet reuse program, changes in methods of cooking to save water, and the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs. The property has ensured that more than 85 percent of its employees have attended its Pan Flu/Health Hands program. Its efforts include a full-time security and an extensive fire safety and hurricane evacuation plan.

"This program was especially pertinent because of the pandemic flu and other issues like that," says CEO and president of MBAHA, Stephen Greene. Additionally, "there's an untapped group of people that demand to find a property that is green oriented, that has this type of certification. The program is a great marketing tool."

Six resorts have been certified since the program's inception in July. Properties receive a certificate as well as Green Clean Safe decals and logo for marketing. Dunes Village received 1,424 points during the MBAHA inspection, though it needed only 990 to pass.
