Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina, is the first in the industry to attain LEED Platinum status, the highest level of certification of the USGBC rating system. Owned by Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels, the Four-Diamond Proximity uses 41 percent less energy and 33 percent less water than its counterparts. The hotel's green techniques include:
- Installation of 100 solar rooftop panels that heat water
- Recycling 87 percent of construction debris
- Use of more than 20 percent recycled content in construction
- Restoration of 700 feet of an adjacent stream
- Installation of elevators that generate electricity on descent
- Use of natural lighting in 97 percent of occupied spaces
- Sourcing 90 percent of furniture locally
- Use of energy recovery systems that provide large amounts of fresh air
