Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre boutique property, has earned LEED Existing Building Operations and Maintenance (LEED-EB O&M) Gold certification. JDV has incorporated numerous green features into the hotel, which opened in 2004. Last year, the hotel became the first in San Francisco to be solar powered. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are used throughout the hotel for energy savings. Filtered water machines and glass pitchers have replaced bottled water. In-room and public bins encourage recycling, while toiletry dispensers populate guest bathrooms in lieu of traditional trial-sized products. Low-VOC paints, nontoxic cleaning products, and carpets made from post-consumer recycled material are also found throughout the hotel. In addition, Hotel Carlton has reduced its annual CO2 by 167 tons, diverted 80 percent of waste from landfills, installed occupant-controlled lighting, reduced water use by 27 percent, and purchased carbon credits to offset all carbon usage.
